Mad River Mountain has fired up it’s 144 snowmaking fan guns in preparation for their 50th season of skiing and riding.
Temperatures dipped into the mid-20s late Wednesday night offering a 12 hour window for snowmaking through Thursday morning. Mad River will continue to make snow as temperatures allow in hopes for a December 16th opening.
While the entire mountain will not be open this weekend the Loft Bar will still host the 50th Anniversary Kick Off Party featuring live music, free pizza, and a raffle for a Fooseball Table. It is the first raffle for the 50 Days of Giveaways promotion that will be handed out throughout the season every Thursday through Sunday.
In addition Capital Park – Mad River’s #1 ranked terrain park – will feature a small rail set up for those wishing to slide on the snow surface. The hike-able park will be free for season passholders and $10 for all others.
Greg Fisher, Mad River’s General Manager, thought it would be good to have some activity going on as the mountain continues to make snow.
“Everyday we’ve been answering posts on our Facebook page and via the phone about our opening day. We know people have the itch to ski and ride so we thought we’d at least have some activity on snow this weekend.”
Mad River Mountain has opened on the third weekend in December the last three years but with temperatures in the mid to upper 30s overnight it has been unable to make snow to meet that goal this year.
Brian Papworth, Marketing & Event Director, noted “It’s better to wait for quality conditions than make a product you can’t be proud of.”
Mad River Mountain has been in business since 1962 and is Ohio’s largest ski resort offering 144 acres, 24 trails and 12 lifts. Mad River also features the Avalanche Tubing Park which was upgraded this summer to 1000’ long and a new expanded lodge.
