The Program: Developed by SKI Magazine in 1968, NASTAR (NAtional STAndard Race) is the largest recreational ski and snowboard race program in the world. Since the program’s inception, more than 6 million NASTAR racer days have been recorded at North American resorts.
Our Mission: To provide a fun, competitive and easily accessible racing program that, through the development of a handicap system, allows racers of all ages and abilities a means to compare their race results to other competitors across the country, regardless of when and where they race.
The Race Experience: Skiers and snowboarders can register to race Nature Valley NASTAR at participating resorts or online at nastar.com. Competitors can choose a racer discipline (Alpine Skier, Snowboarder or Telemarker) when registering to race. There are also separate race categories for physically challenged racers. In addition, Nature Valley NASTAR offers participants the opportunity to organize teams and compete against other teams across the country. Participants compete in their age & gender category in their division as determined by their handicap. After each race, participants earn a handicap which represents the difference between their race time and the time of the NASTAR National Pacesetter expressed as a percentage. The National Pacesetter establishes the National Standard or the “0” handicap which every racer competes against when they race Nature Valley NASTAR. Participants may win a Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze medal in their age group, depending on the handicap earned each time they race. Depending on the number of times an individual races, they will also receive a national, state and/or resort ranking in their age & gender category in their division.
National Championships: The culminating event of the Nature Valley NASTAR season is the National Championships, which brings together participants of all ages and abilities from across the country to compete for National Titles and enjoy three days of spirited competition, partying and fun. The 2010 Nature Valley NASTAR National Championships will take place at Winter Park Resort, Colorado March 25-28th. Participants qualify by being ranked in the top three in their age & gender category in their division at any NASTAR resort as of February 15. For the 2008-09 season, an incredible 1,040 competitors ranging in ages from 3 to 90 from 44 states, five countries and 105 resorts made their way to Steamboat to compete for National Titles with over 3,500 ski enthusiasts in attendance.
